Caylus - The Trader

caylusthetrader.jpg
The Trader - A fanmade tile for Caylus. Designed by Dan Rosewater. Caylus is copyrighted and designed by William Attia. The game is published by Ystari Games.

After The Guild of Thieves, The Hospital and The Royal Luxury Tailor, Dan Rosewater has created another homemade Caylus tile: The Trader, a stone building.

Building the trader tile will cost one unit of stone and one unit of food. This will quickly add three victory points to your score and and one denier to your purse. Once built, The Trader will allow players to earn one resource (except gold) of their choice plus two deniers.

I personally think that Dan has hit the trader-theme with this mechanism: Players send their workers to the trader. These workers have to work hard, shift goods in the backyard and do all the difficult tasks. As compensation, this worker then receives a resource from their store plus a little bit of wage.

Caylus - The Guild of Thieves

Dan Rosewater apparently is a big Caylus fan. In addition to The Hospital and The Royal Luxury Tailor, he has come up with another cool mini-extension for Caylus: The Guild of Thieves.

Building the guild costs one stone and two victory points, making it the first Caylus building to cost victory points. There is of course an excellent reason: the King does not like Thieves which causes a little penalty. However, consider this a good investment as the building allows players to steal one goods cube from other players. Therefore, it's favorable to build the Guild of Thieves, if you can be pretty sure that you are high up on the turn order track.

Caylus - The Guild of Thieves (variant)
The Guild of Thieves (variant) - (c) as above.

For those of us who might consider this a little bit too influential, Dan has created a variant causing the loss of only one victory point. As a result the guild is not as powerful and allows you to "only" steal a denar from your competition.

In addition to this variant, Dan has also created some advanced rules to balance the card a little bit. But why don't you download the file from BoardGameGeek (click here)? I think, all of Dan's tiles make a fun extension four the next Caylus session...

Caylus - The Royal Luxury Tailor

Dan Rosewater has designed another fan-produced tile for Caylus: The Royal Luxury Tailor. Building the tailor requires 1 Gold, 1 Cloth and 2 Wood, but gives you six victory points instantly. In addition players can earn one additional victory point per turn by placing a worker onto this tile.

Given the relatively low building costs this could actually pay off well, if your strategy allows you to have a free worker every now and then.

Who is behind the Caylus-hype?

On a recent edition of The Dice Tower podcast (#32), Tom Vasel and Joe Steadman were talking about games they would not play because of their religious faith. Although the list did not include any war-games several fantasy-themed games had been mentioned.

Whatever one might think about the influence of religious faith on the games one likes to play, there is a game I personally still want to play because of my religious faith...

Here is why...

Caylus Essen 2005 bonus card: The Jeweller
The Jeweller, a new card for Caylus is available: Apparently this card has been given out at Essen 2005, although I did not get it when I bought the game. Bad luck, but maybe, they'll have a reprint.

Click here to get The Jeweller from the Ystari Games website.

In addition, a Caylus FAQ is also available.
