Sword Beach scenario
Shelak and I had a chance to play the Sword Beach scenario from Memoir'44 today. According to 508 official Memoir '44 battle reports, this scenario has been won by the Allies in 47% of times. This indicates that there is a small advantage for the Axis player. As Shelak wanted to play the Allies the odds seemed better for me. However, in the first three to four turns I lost quite a few units and suffered additional casualties. I then had a little bit of luck with my card draws and got the Behind Enemy Lines card which helped me destroy one of the Allies' elite infantry units. Since this card has helped me a lot in previous scenarios I am always happy to play it. The psychological effects can be tremendous :). But anyway, we continued playing and the dice odds shifted a little bit. I was able to defeat two additional units while Shelak destroyed another one of my infantry units in a bunker. To make things more interesting, we had a little break for dinner and continued the game afterwards.

Break for dinner
On the next turn the Allies were able to destroy yet another Axis infantry unit which made it a 3:3 draw. The Allied forces were able to take the village Riva Bella which gave them yet another victory point. However, in the next two turns the Axis was able to destroy 2 units with some very lucky dice rolls. This made it an 5:4 victory for the Axis forces.

Final standings
We then immediately took the rematch where Naturelich was playing the Allies and Shelak the Axis forces. The Allies lost their first armor unit pretty soon. Due to the Behind Enemy Lines card, the Allies were able to quickly conquer the village in the middle, scoring a 1:1 tie. However the Axis artillery was too strong and killed the infantry unit in no time making it a glorious 2:0 for the Axis player. At least, the Allies were able to cause some heavy casualties with one of the Axis infantry unit in the North. With a lucky long distance shot, this unit got destroyed by an infantry unit next to an Axis bunker. 2:1. The Axis forces continued to defend their position well and were able to defeat another infantry unit. The Allies had a lot of bad luck with a barrage targeting the bunkered Axis artillery unit. No damage at all. What a looser. The Axis then had Their Finest Hour with four infantries attacking and destroying 2 additional Allied units. 5:1 - what a glorious victory. *shame on me*

The final situation of the rematch
Comments
How could the Axis lost this war? Since we've already played Omaha some weeks ago and now sword beach and in all four games the axis were ahead of the allies... I enjoyed this game and am proud, that I beat naturelich with a few points. What a glorious victory in the rematch!!!

Well, not only glorious. I did not have the slightest chance. Maybe I am playing this totally wrong. Next time we meet on "the" beach, I'll advance less slowly and stop doing more Himmelfahrtskommandos. Those are not good for my health... ;)
