GLA #12: Thematic lists about Air Combat Games

While I was browsing the huge amount of GeekLists relating to the wargame hobby, I felt a need to generate sub-clusters. This GeekListAggregator focuses solely on air combat games. The existing lists are sorted by historic period.
In order to give credit to the main contributor of these lists, please have a look at game designer Andrea Angiolino's personal website.

GeekList #1302: Colorful biplanes in the skies of Europe 1914-1918 by Andrea Angiolino
Game designer Andrea Angiolino is well known for his expertise on air combat games. He has used this knowledge to compile several wonderful lists about air combat games. This first list focuses on games with biplanes in the WWI era. The list includes 25 games. And although I am an air combat game newbie, I was correct in assuming that the game Top Gun would not appear in this list ;)

GeekList #2965: Strategy and tactics in WWII skies: tactics! by Andrea Angiolino
Moving forward in time - this list deals with WWII. But WWII alons is a very huge topic, Andrea Angiolino has devided the WWII-themed games into a set of tactical and strategic games. This list compiles 25 games where each counter represents a single aircraft unit.

GeekList #2966: Strategy and tactics in WWII skies: strategy by Andrea Angiolino
This is the second list of World War II games. To make it brief: 20 games where each counter represents more than a single aircraft unit.

GeekList #4046: Air Combat in the Jet Era by Joe Scoleri
This GeekList is taking yet another step forward in time. This list compliments the World War I & II lists mentioned above. Joe Scoleri uses his list to focus on the post-WWII era. He also includes games with both air and ground forces, but only if the air forces are not heavily abstracted. The unit scale is assumed to be plane-to-plane. And, oh, yes, you'll finally find Top Gun in this list :D

GeekList #9021: Air War over Vietnam by Michel Boucher
This list certainly has some overlap, but focuses solely on air combat in Vietnam. This list does not include air cav games as those are related to movement of ground troops. All games mentioned are tactical, i.e. each counter represents one unit (or a few units at most). The Vietnam war apparently seems to be a difficult topic for wargame designers. Michael points out that the only significant portion of the air war was the air-to-ground bombing of Hanoi and Haiphong and the stern resistance of the North Vietnamese people. This leaves us with 5 games.

GeekList #1611: Colorful creatures in the skies of some fantasy world by Andrea Angiolino
This GeekList includes games with air vehicles, but takes them to a fantasy level. Instead of moving Messerschmidts around, players will take a shot at each other with dragons, wyverns and flying carpets. The mechanisms are somewhat similar but the theme is more Lord of the Rings-like.

GeekList #2972: Civilian pilots by Andrea Angiolino
This list investigates the civilian side of piloting an aircraft or building airline industries. Strictly speaking this civiliation aviation list is off-topic for wargamers, but it's certainly related to the aircraft topic in general (so I decided to include it anyway).

GeekList #617: Airship Games by Rick Heli
Rick has compiled a list of 14 airship games (the German Zeppelins). I mentioned it at the bottom of this GLA as it is partially off-topic and not only includes air combat games but airship games in general.
