Session of Carcassonne - The Discovery

Carcassonne - The Discovery Session February 11th 2006

It took me quite a while to get Carcassonne - The Discovery to the table. Today we started off with the latest official "Carcassonne clone-game". The German title is Carcassonne - Neues Land and I bought the game at Essen 2005. To make it short: this is a buy I do regret. We didn't have time to play the game at Essen but I got a copy anyway. I was probably thinking that each Carcassonne game has been pretty good so far and why would this one be different? Well, it is not as good as the others. Hans im Glück has developed a new layout - instead of building medieval cities and roads, players are now building entire landscapes with cities in them. It is somewhat similar to the zoom-out feature on Google Maps. The rules have changed a little bit. WIthout going into more detail (at this stage) the game did not click for any of us. It was just not as good as any of the previous games in the Carcassone family. In a four player game it felt as if it were depending on luck way too much. The score you may get depends so much more on the tiles you draw. I will probably give this game another try (maybe in a two-player setting) and maybe I have been missing something on the tactical side.

Below, are some impressions of the game.
