Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith

swep3.jpg

Finally, finally, Naturelich made it to see Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The third episode has been long anticipated. I had prepared by watching episode 2 on DVD. While no real surprises seemed possible, the movie was the best in the three Star Wars prequels. A lot of action, a fascinating story and incredible SFX. Not a fully realistic story-arc - but which SciFi movie has ever been realistic?

R2D2 had his moments, he really changed into a fun character. C3PO was rather lame this time and I am particularly happy that Jar Jar Binks was only visible for 3 seconds. Anakin Skywalker's character development was impressive - but a little bit too fast in certain areas. He turned evil in too short a time. Although we have seen many hints even in Episode 2, I still found this went way too fast. I would have expected greater influencing by Lord Palpatine.

Tori Amos setlist database

I have just discovered a wonderful thing: the Tori Amos Setlist Database at www.toriset.org. It is so great: you can look at all the rare cover songs she has played, you can view trends and go way way back to a concert you have seen.

For example, here are the setlists of two concerts Naturelich attended:

  • December 13th, 2001. Messe Basel. Basel, Switzerland

  • January 21st, 2003. König-Pilsener-Arena. Oberhausen, Germany
  • In Oberhausen she played the magnificent River by Joni Mitchell. This was probably one of the greatest cover songs I have ever ever heard.

    Tori Amos in Bonn

It was the third time I was able to watch Tori Amos live. I had seen her before during the Strange Little Girls Tour in Basel on December 13th, 2002 and during the On Scarlet's Walk Tour in Oberhausen (January 21st, 2003). Today, her Original Sinsuality Tour hit Bonn's Museumsplatz (directly next to where the Tutanchamun exhibition was hosted earlier this year). It was a great concert although she did not play the usual Cornflake Girl. She started a few minutes before 20:00 hrs with 4 pianos on stage. Tori was in a good mood. She said if the weather was hot, so was she. The crowd, though, was very disappointing. Maybe it was the heat, but they certainly where not hardcore fans.

The setlist included many songs from her current album and a few classics:

During this tour, Tori plays cover songs in a session called Tori's Piano Bar. Today, she played Elton John's Daniel and Don McLean's Vincent. She pointed out that Daniel was probably the first song she knew how to play and was also one of her favorites. A funny thing happened during that second song. She started it once, then stopped abruptly. "I guess I fucked this one up..." and started again, this time a little bit slower and more passionate.

My personal favorites where Parasol, Original Sinsuality, Happy Phantom and China. All extremely great on a hot summer's night.

    An evening in Munich

I left Basel and headed for Munich tonight. My hotel is located in Neuperlach - not the best area to live in. It's about €60,- by taxi from the Airport. But the hotel room was not expensive. Great, the intention was too save some money. Next time, I'll use a good airport hotel and organize a lift with one of my colleagues. Just in time, I was able to grap a Gyros Pita (for €3,-) and enjoyed Brazil tie Japan 2:2. How great, if Brazil had lost this game...

There is a great new D-English term around:

    Sunny Basel

Naturelich has arrived in Basel for another business trip. Since the weather is excellent (>34°C) the hotel room was not the best place to stay in the evening. The Rhine river banks were populated with sun-loving people. Many dived into the water swimming down the river for a few hundred meters. It is just amazing here. If only I could get rid of the suit & the tie I am wearing here and join these people. It would just be an extraordinary holiday. Tonight, I hope to find a Biergarten with a huge TV set. Germany plays Argentina. And Kahn is not on the team. Great news, isn't it?

    Successful sports weekend

    What a sports weekend:

  • Only 6 cars participating in Formula 1's Indianapolis race. And Michael Schumacher to win this legendary race. Michelin with heavy image problems. Let's see what Wallstreet says on Monday...

  • Germany's women win the European Soccer Championship. Almost unnoticed on German TV

  • Japan beats the European champion Greece 1:0 in the 2005 Confederations Cup. They could've scored a couple of goals...

  • Mexico beats Brazil 1:0, despite the fact that a penalty for Mexico had to be repeated three times. But finally: no goal... Main actor in this: Roberto Rosetti. I think he has can soon write a book: How to make yourself into a super important referee...

    Metallica live in Austin, TX

For a limited time LiveMetallica.com offers 9 songs from the February 3rd, 1989 show. The band had previously published free bootlegs of their old shows on the MetallicaVault. But due to cost considerations, this site is now taken down. The heritage is carried hence forward by LiveMetallica. Content is supposed to change each month.

The first show published there adds up to a total running time of 44:06 minutes of free and live Metallica music. Get it before it's gone.

    Germany beats Australia 4:3

Frankfurt's Waldstadion is a magnificent arena. We went there to see Germany play Australia as part of the Confederations Cup 2005. Our seats were excellent and we had great views of the first two Australian goals, as well as the last two German goals. The game was really thrilling as Germany's defense was again a nightmare. But the offense made up for it. Let's hope Kahn gets exchanged on Saturday and we see some improevements of the German defense throughout the tournament.

The finale is set on June 29th and we expect nothing less than Germany participating.

    U2 auf Schalke

    u2schalke.jpg

U2's Vertigo//2005 tour hit Gelsenkirchen's Veltins-Arena and Naturelich was able to get a ticket - what a rare occassion. The event was fabulous and one of the greatest gigs I have seen - of any band - ever. To be honest I am a fan of the old U2 - those magnificent songs like With Or Without You, Where the Streets Have No Name or Sunday Bloody Sunday. I got their latest How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb album and found it was okay. No song stood out as being as classy as the old tunes...

...but this was before seeing them live. The experience was stunning, the atmosphere great, the audience ein Hammer. And the music even better. These songs really work when played live. And they did play With or Without You. What more can be asked?

...oh, yeah, Bono wore a T-shirt with Schalke on the front and 04 on the back - a nice gesture...

    Here is the full setlist:

  • Vertigo

  • Beautiful Day

  • Cry / Electric Co.

  • Elevation

  • New Year1s Day

  • City of Blinding Lights

  • Miracle Drug

  • Sometimes you can't make it on your own

  • Love and Peace

  • Sunday Bloody Sunday

  • Bullet The Blue Sky

  • Running to Standstill

  • Pride in the name of love

  • Where the Streets have no name

  • One
  • Break 1

  • Zoo Station

  • The Fly

  • Mysterious Ways
  • Break 2

  • With Or Without You

  • All Because of You

    Sports-night

Today, Naturelich enjoyed another hour of badminton. A lot of fun, but the sore muscles from Tuesday rendered me rather immobile (more or less). It was still a lot of fun and we had some cool rallies. But now it's time to sit and relax the muscles...

Kahn causes Germany to draw Russia 2:2

We went to see Germany play Russia tonight. This soccer game was the first international match to take place in the new Borussia-Park arena. My grandson and uncle managed to arrive a little bit earlier than I did. Despite the crowd we met each other directly in front of the stadium. Our seats where on the third to last row in the stadium. However, the view and atmosphere was still great.

The game started off with a small disaster: Russia scored first somewhere around the middle of the first half. Germany's keeper, Oliver Kahn, made a very bad impression on this one, as he was tunneled by Russia's Anyukov.

Luckily, Schweinsteiger (funny name if translated to English: pig climber) was able to score a tie - with a little luck as the ball was diverted by a Russian defense player. Germany got better and better and eventually Schweinsteiger scored again in the second half. The German team had a few more close encounters with the third goal but it did not happen. Instead, when everyone was already thinking about upcoming after-game events, the Russians scored during injury time. And again, Oliver Kahn was very indecisive when being played off by Kerzhakov. Maybe, he is not the best choice any more?!

We shall see during the upcoming FIFA Confederations Cup 2005. For Germany the tournament opens against Australia on 15th June in Frankfurt. I was able to get two tickets and naturelich we hope for a better result. Don't we???

    Good news...

Today was a very good day as I heard some extremely great news from a friend. I love days with good news like that! It's always great if you want to have a beer with a friend just to celebrate. The problem being (in this particular case), he is a "couple of" miles away, but we'll drink to it soon enough!

    Hilden's Badminton sports park

Today we played Badminton at a different venue in Hilden (located close to Düsseldorf at the intersection of Autobahn A3 and A46) with a large group of people. I think we were 7 altogether and had 2 courts to play on. I started off by playing 2 vs. 1. Our opponent was really good - although we tried hard he went ahead 0:6. But then we made it back into the game scoring a fabulous 6:8 - only 2 more points to get. But it was a pain and he eventually beat us at 12:15. Not bad at all :)

In the next game (a single match) I was lucky to win 15:8. But the real great thing happened in the next game. We played a double against another player and he was playing like a Badminton god. It was a great experience and we explored each and every corner of the court (going back and forth, back and forth, back and...). I think we got like 2 points here.

Then we switched sides and I had to play alone. How fair was that? But, I got really ambitious and was able to score 8 points. But 6 points were really luck (or rather: good-will)! Nevertheless, it was a huge bit of fun and extremely enjoyable...

    Star Wars II

In preparation of me watching Star Wars III in the movies, I have bought the Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones-DVD. I needed a fresh-up as I had not seen the film in a while (last time I saw it was actually in the movies a couple of years ago). I was (am?) a great fan of the original Star Wars movies and was enthusiastic about the first prequel: Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. But it did not work out. It was too much a children's story and Jar Jar Binks totally ruined the experience.

But I was somewhat propitiated by Attack of the Clones. Jar Jar was only there for a few minutes (still way too much, though) and the story was a little bit more fascinating. After having just finished watching it, I am really exited now to see the third installment. We already got a lot of hints at what is about to come and I am very much looking forward to closing some of the gaps that are still missing (Leia and Luke need to be pro-created and received, Anakin will most certainly be transformed into Uncle Darth and C-3PO will cerainly be as entertainingly stupid as ever...

    Googling for naturelich

Inspired by Germany's recent discussion about simplifying (or re-inventing)) German orthography I will report about googling for results on my pseudonym.

Naturelich is an artifical word. It is similar to the German word natürlich - which can be translated as:

  • of course

  • certainly

  • of course (but not: off course as the blog banner suggests ;) )

  • naive

  • native

  • naturally

  • needless to say

  • that is

  • elemental

  • inartificial
  • As you can see, natürlich is a very diverse word in the German language. Just as irritatingly diverse as this blog. If a native speaker of the English language has to pronounce natürlich, I have found it best to spell it like this: naturelich [Note: The ch at the end will still be difficult, though]. In the process of making the decision to use this word as my pseudonym, I was googling for the word and found some hits, where people had made spelling mistakes (trying to avoid the ü-character aka u-Umlaut and replacing it be ue). And since the one year anniversary of this blog gets closer and closer I started googeling again for the word.

And, guys, you won't believe this! I am not only a spelling mistake. I exist in reality, in Georgia, in the United States of America! What I found is published by the FLAG organisation (Foreign Language Association of Georgia) in their 2001 conference program:

[quote] Character Education in the FLES Classroom? Aber naturelich! – Margita Haberlen, Austin Elementary School, Dunwoody, GA. The presenters will show that it is not only possible to reinforce the state mandated character education program in the foreign language classroom, but that it is also a wonderful means to enrich and enliven it. The handouts, based on work with elementary students, can be easily adapted for older German students. German – all levels. [unquote]

So, apparently Margita was using the term naturelich in her classroom long before this blog. And it prooves: the term is really existing: they use it in Georgia to teach their students the German language. It is not a spelling mistake. I am not a spelling mistake. Naturelich is something which can be put to good use when educating small kids. What an exciting coming-out. Don't you think =8)

I really feel better and relieved now.

    Zurich, Solothurn and Basel...

Having returned from two days in Switzerland I am pretty exhausted. The Swiss plane was stuck at Basel airport for half an hour and due to bad thunderstorms, the service was stopped. Bad luck for someone who was naturelich hungry. Even worse, because this was the first flight after Swiss had re-introduced free snacks in eco.

Airberlin was far better on the flight to Zurich. Friendly, quick and cheap. Just a little bit too early in the day. Getting up at 4.00 o'clock is not one of my particular strengths...

I stayed in Solothurn's the Hotel an der Aare from Thursday night to Friday. The hotel was opened in January 2005 and is one of the best hotels in the city. The hotel building was used as a hospital (Altes Spital) in the 18th century. The hotel has a magnificent view over the Aare river and the mountains. Especially the restaurant is magnificient - given the right weather. And funny enough, the sun was shining all along in Switzerland...
