Bill Gates: The New World of Work

Bill Gates has published a new Executive E-mail. Gates points out that information-worker software needs to evolve to a point where the software adapts and helps the user to cope with the ever changing work-environment. The key words to overcoming these challenges are pattern recognition, smart content, visualization and simulation. Since a company's competetive advantage heavily relies upon the ability and speed at which ideas are transformed into value, the new era of software tools need to:

  • Improve personal productivity

  • Automate routine operations through pattern recognition and adaptive filtering

  • Support unified communication

  • Capture live data and documents to benefit team collaboration

  • Optimizes supply chains

  • Helps to find the right information
  • If you now think the next version of MS Word or MS Outlook will optimize your supply chain, you better click here to read the entire article...

    Jet lag

Wow. That's been something. It has been a long trip from New Orleans via Chicago O'Hare via London Heathrow to Düsseldorf. The worst thing occured to me in London. Apparently, Heathrow does not have a decent transportation system. Therefore, they use buses to take passengers from terminal to terminal. Guess who had a short connection? Guess who missed the first bus and had to wait ten minutes for the next(regularly one is supposed to wait 6 minutes, but it was not a regular day)? Guess who stood in the wrong (read: slow) line at security? Yes, naturelich, you have already guessed correctly.

You can imagine my relief when I noticed the flight was delayed. This actually gave me a few minutes to walk (read: not run) to the gate. It was a British Airways flight. Yes, and there was a reason for the delay - the air condition was not working. After my rush to the gate I had just cooled down a little bit. And things were starting to heat and sweat up again. Imagine: we are sitting there in this miserable British Airways plane and little flight attendant cannot bring no water to none of the passengers. Yeah, exactly, remember the slogan: ba.com - making traveling easier?

The pilot was going like hell to make up for the delay and he was able to cut it down to 45 minutes only. By that time, the air condition was running again. I went home just to unpack my suitcase, water the plants and grab something to eat. I just wanted to sleep - but could not. I therefore enjoyed watching some decent German television. I went to bed at 1 a.m. and slept 14 hourse until 3 p.m.
A new personal record! Can you imagine? I could've slept even longer but the phone was ringing and this woke me up. Bad luck, I know.

The bad news is: my sleep cycle is completely messed up. I woke up at 4 a.m. and started to read and work and naturelich update my blog. And now I am waiting for the shops to open - I am hungry...

    Applause at New Orleans airport

I was sitting at New Orleans' Armstrong International Airport and reading a book, when all of a sudden spontaneous applause started to rise from somewhere. It was rather strange as I was not able to see anything. Maybe some famous film stars arriving?! Or a popular politician or rock band? But no: it was soldiers arriving. They were easy to recognize in their "desert uniform". People were applauding and tapping onto their shoulders.

    Naturelich, I was rather surprised...

New Orleans - Small Picture Gallery

I have just returned from 2 hours on foot through New Orleans. It is totally exhausting. The weather is so hot and humid! It's simply unbearable. Naturelich, you are extremely happy, when entering an air-conditioned shop. I'll quickly take a shower and continue back into the action with a colleague of mine.

But now, enough of the talking, here are some impressions...

    24 - The Season Finale

A great season just came to an end. It has been a terrific season and the finale did justice to this. The politics and the action both came to a climax and for the first time I am not certain whether they'll have a new season. Without spoinling too much - it looks grim for Agent Bauer. But maybe they'll find a way to bring him back! I would definitely look forward to it... It's my favorite show!

    Ever had a Handgrenade?

    handgrenade.jpg

It's the most surprising cocktail I have ever had. It is a New Orleans special. Registered as a trademark it may not be copied by other bars and restaurants in the US. It is only available at Tropicalisle and Funky Pirate on Bourbon Street. It is really sweet and really strong - but only after a while. At first you don't really notice but after half an hour it really hits you hard. And the hit is just like some kind of grenade kicking you off your feet! I definitely recommend them. Oh, and, by the way, there is no living being who had five in a row... :)

    Arrival in New Orleans

    wyndhamhotel.jpg

The journey to New Orleans has been good. I went with British Airways to London Heathrow where I enjoyed a few hours at the airport. Time goes by easily if you have to change between terminals and can get to visit a few shops (books, DVD, music,...). The British were all watching their FA Cup Final and a huge noise was made by the fans after a team had scored. It is quite interesting to see that not only Germans are like that.... ;-)

Anyway. I went on to the gate where the American Airlines Boing had just arrived. I had asked for a seat near the bulk where people have more leg space - even in economy class. And: I was really lucky - I got the last seat. Oh, did I mention that it was next to a young family with two very young children. My mood was deteriorating a little bit. But the kids were really nice and I could get a good night's (afternoon's actually) sleep. I also read a book during the flight which was very fascinating.

After going through US immigration and customs at Chicago O'Hare Intl. I had to wait another hour at the gate. I got an ice tea and an apple and continued reading. I was getting really tired. On the United flight to New Orleans I slept the whole time and had a hell of a pain in the neck. The flight was crowded and there was little leg space. But anyway, I finally made it to New Orleans, took a cab to the hotel and here I am using the hotel's complimentary internet connection to update my blog. Next thing up is breakfast and to register at the conference.

    Leaving for New Orleans

Naturelich will be leaving for New Orleans in about 14 hours. It's gonna be a long trip and I will arrive at about 23:00 local time. I suspect I'll have no trouble sleeping then. I hope to have some internet access there and maybe post some news. But do not bet too much money on this. I seem to have very limited time lately to update the blog regularly.

FC Basel wins Swiss soccer championship

    fcb championship

All hell broke loose in Basel when FC Basel won the Swiss soccer championship. There were huge crowds on Barfüsserplatz celebrating their teams victory. Since the weather was real nice it was a wonderful party with excellent atmosphere. Although everyone was a little bit too drunk.

Congratulations to the new Swiss champion 2004/2005...

Today is a holiday - rest and relaxation activities as well as organizing the household are the duties of today. But the general speed is much slower than in recent weeks. Great!

The Brie, The Bullet and The Blackcat

Monsieur Huges Le Grandbutte, the Deputy-Mayor of Casablanca, together with his wife Edith and his daughter Nicole invited to a murder mytery dinner party: The Brie, The Bullet and The Blackcat. Naturelich was invited to a murder mystery evening party set in Casablance in 1942, a few weeks before the American invasion. Otto von Pinkelwürst, a German Gestapo man had also joined the party. Countess Bogov, a beautiful Russian aristocrat was sitting right next to him. She seemed to be sympathizing with Otto. A Danish art dealer, Ingrid Pith was sitting right opposite to me. Monsieur Oily-Carte, a French booking agent from the Moulin Blue had a huge mustache and a really bad French accent. But he seemed nice - at first.

Naturelich, I cannot tell you any of the details of the evening (because that would spoil your experience) but it was real real fun! The pictures are censored though...

Re-start after two weeks without Badminton

Today we played Badminton again. After a week of sickness and another one filled with a business trip my game was in pretty bad shape today. Exhaustion is probably the word describing it best. I had two large drinks afterwards and I felt they were well deserved. The game was real fun but I got chased and chased and chased without having too much luck or success. But we had a couple of good laughs during the game so my good mood will continue on over night, I guess...

    A lovely piece of technology

    The new 3 series

    This thing is really beautiful...
